Situated in the heart of the 'Côte d'Argent,' Lacanau remains a gem on France's Atlantic Coast, offering a picturesque destination bordered with pine trees and protected by sand dunes. During a fortunate few weeks spent here, I took the opportunity to surf, unwind, and eat countless pain au chocolat. In the following, I share insights into the surf breaks after exploring the area by bike and relishing each sunset with a glass of wine.
During an unexpected bike detour caused by a swarm of hornets (a long story in itself), I found myself north of Lacanau in Carcans. This reachable beach break, though not surfed by me, is quite similar to the options closer to town. The main break is on Plage de Carcans, and there are peaks everywhere. I observed this break at sunset from a sand dune, regretting not trying it out.
Heading to La Sud, I was drawn to its sunset bar, adding to its popularity. This spot features all sandbanks, making it perfect for an early morning surf before the winds and crowds pick up. While I didn't manage to catch any waves, the scenic beauty, especially with the bodyboarders at sunset, turned it into a memorable experience.
Moving on to La Centrale, characterized by beach jetties, it's an excellent spot for beginners, offering consistent right and left breaks. Other, more unpredictable peaks drift to the north and south. With various rental options, this spot is conveniently located right down the street.
Although too big for this trip, La Nord stands out as arguably the most famous break in Lacanau. This strong and punchy beach break, typical of the French west coast, comes with the added consistency of right-breaking sandbanks. Perhaps a goal for my next visit—only time will tell!
